Dual or Tricolor Fiber Photometry System
The R811 and R821 multichannel fiber photometry systems are compatible with optoelectronic equipment and designed for precise neural signal recording. Both feature a 410 nm reference light to reduce noise. R811 offers dual wavelengths (410 nm & 470 nm) for green fluorescence indicators like GCaMP and dLight, while R821 adds 560 nm for red indicators such as RCaMP and jrGECO1a. Both systems can record signals from up to nine sites simultaneously.
The fiber photometry system measures changes in fluorescence intensity within specific brain regions to reflect neuronal population activity. It enables long-term, stable monitoring of neurons in freely moving animals and helps reveal the correlation between neural activity and behavior. The RWD Multichannel Fiber Photometry System offers excitation wavelengths at 410 nm, 470 nm, and 560 nm—where 410 nm serves as a reference to eliminate noise. It supports recording of green indicators such as GCaMP and dLight, as well as red indicators like RCaMP and jrGECO1a. In addition, the system includes a 635 nm input for optogenetic stimulation and simultaneous signal recording at the same site.

The fiber photometry system uses a low-cost implanted cannula that does not require an overhead miniscope. Simple animal surgery, lightweight implants, and smaller data files make it ideal for long-term experiments in freely behaving animals. With a high signal-to-noise ratio and compatibility with various behavioral paradigms, the system is used with GCaMP—one of the genetically encoded calcium indicators (GECIs)—to record neuronal activity.
Although electrophysiology provides the highest temporal accuracy, it is limited in detecting cell-type-specific population neuronal activity in deep brain structures of behaving animals. As an alternative, fiber photometry offers a sensitive and straightforward method to achieve this using one or more multimode optical fibers implanted in the brain.
In behavioral neuroscience, correlating neuronal responses with animal behavior is central to understanding functional neural circuits. The multi-channel fiber photometry system provides valuable insight by simultaneously recording activity from multiple brain regions, allowing researchers to observe coordinated neuronal responses during specific tasks. This makes it especially effective for studying how behavior arises from integrated neural signals across connected regions. Additionally, it is efficient—and often essential—for investigating neural correlates of social interaction, particularly sociosexual behaviors, by recording interactions between different animals.
The RWD multi-channel fiber photometry system offers four main advantages:
- High Sensitivity: Dual detector and TDM design.
- Convenient and Efficient: Supports simultaneous recording from 9 channels.
- Data Visualization: Integrated data acquisition and analysis functions.
- Feature-Rich Extensions: Multiple interfaces and versatile event marking.
